Just when I thought I wouldn't have to worry about upgrading mg2 for a while a generous user decides to donate a server to us! I like to do these things all at once so I'm contemplating how to pull it and other goals off. As you know.. there is no more free hosting at mg2.org.. after 5+ years of serving the internet. It was a really hard thing to do. There are a few reasons for this. We couldn't support enough people The user system defined hardware limitations and requirements but did not limit people requirements. Nothing scaled. One box. One set of users. The mainstream user does not want a shell on a NIX box, they want an easy to use interface We couldn't keep the kiddies out Our userbase had sites that had been exploited, [...]
nox.mg2.org, mg2.org (free) primary is down. this is bad. this is the third time this has happened since the box has gone into the data center. Something's failing pretty hard. I'm not sure what it is. I asked the people at the ISP to tell me the status of the server to try and help deduce what exactly is happening. I have some bad news, and I have some good news. The good news is we're getting a badly needed overhaul to our look and feel, a complete revamp of the user system, as well as an ability for users to have a political influence throughout the tree. The bad news is its going to take me a while to finish everything. We won't see new user applications for at least a few more weeks, and we probably wont see the sponsor tools re-emerge for a month or so.
