[mg2] Hi Again (And yay VirtueMeter) by Michael @ 05/20/07 12:32:29 PM

Hey,

It's been quite a while since I posted something substantial. I felt semi-squelched by my previous employer. Well.. actually.. I was more self-squelched due to a "you should squelch yourself" vibe that I felt at my previous employer. Squelch, or at least heavily and selectively encrypt.. and that's not easy to broadcast.

So .. I emerge. I'd say something dumb like "from the shadows" or something but, it'd be .. yeah it'd be dumb. I'm back again at the ol' University. It kind of feels like I never left. Everything is largely the same, except a few key differences that directly impact the viability of my happiness there. One being a newfound emphasis on development (wow). The other being an acknowledgment that I was right about some things I was right about. The result is, I'm a lot less jaded. I'm also less idealistic. Though I can save my idealism for my side projects, where it hurts things less.

I have this really long track record of doing whatever I can to make people happy, or happy with me. From the checkout clerk at the grocery store all the way to clients, coworkers, and employers. It is almost always the product an unfair compromise where I out myself in order to lubricate any dealings with people with this happy / pleasant front that enables me to slip away from any confrontation or discomfort easily and amicably. That all ended like 3 months ago, when I pissed people off on purpose, for the first time, in an effort to self-preserve.

I don't know if I should be proud, or ashamed, or whatever. I feel a little bit of both, it's a unique gray conflicted area. I've historically been a very polar person, so I'm kind of digging it.

And finally (this really should have been 'firstally'), VirtueMeter is in kind of an "as-long-as-you-don't-use-ie" beta testing period. The functionality all works, and even in IE (unless there are new bugs opened by my buddy brian (turned QA guy)), it's just IE7 makes it look dumb w/ dumb alignment and dumb etcetera.

So go to http://www.virtuemeter.com/ and sign up for an account, and submit your deeds. If anyone's interested in finding bugs, I'll hook you up with a Trac account.
