[Pissed] Labor Day Weekend by Michael @ 09/04/06 10:05:38 AM

Last week started out well enough.  Tuesday I had an interview with some pretty darn cool people... I was feeling good, even if I didn't take the job, I was at least thinking I might have a source of contract $$'s.  Their whole back end is written in Perl!  I think that's rad enough, but I search (yes, stop using google as a verb) around and there are fresh posts implicating that they're a software sweatshop.  Which IMO is how any company of their type should be run.  But then the whole question of .. do *I* want to work there and give up my 5+ weeks of vacation, tuition, paid overtime, yadda yadda yadda... No.  Not really.  The people who interviewed me seemed to be brilliant.. but I have my own priorities on the side and they really aren't all about writing small web apps to do advanced datamining for advertising firms who get paid to be the middle men.  I'm not even the marketing type.

I go back to corporate america now, especially to one of these small-time second-wave dot-com jobbies, and it's over for me.  All of the time I invested in doing my own thing is pretty much for nothing, or worse, for "them".  Their being cool is one thing.  But I have to work on a Dell, and work 70 hour weeks for nothing.  In order to make me happy they'd need to pay me DOUBLE what I make, and give me DOUBLE the vacation they give.  I don't think they can do that, and honestly I'm not willing to go.  All these things make it ok that I missed my final interview with them on Friday due to my needing a rabies vaccine because a bat was flying around in my room.  I punched it in the face.. then PJ jumped in.  Anyway, I gotta spend my labor day in Oakwood hospital's emergency room trying to get a vaccine.  I hate it there.  It is shit.  It takes 6 hours of waiting around just for someone to stick a needle in your arm.  The whole thing took less than 3 minutes, but I had to be there 6 hours.  I understand there are priorities, but can't you just knock out the low hanging fruit right quick?  I mean Kriss and I can self-administer.  Just write us a prescription!

Finally, the Michigan opener.  What a day.  What seemed like a hopeful situation kind of took a turn for the worse as the day ground on.  At first, the inverter we had blew a fuse... then the dish wasn't getting any signal, then we were missing parts for the keg, then the keg wasn't working properly, then the can-vultures came around chatting us up, THEN the can-vultures started fighting amongst themselves, eventually this led to one of the can vultures getting thrown into a grill followed by some mean spirited cursing in the form of "die die die die" which I think is a good way to express oneself.  In short, the weekend provides lots of story material.  The hospital has called, time to go get our shot.

[+] Comment (Fun 2nd Interview) by Mikey G @ 09/11/06 11:21:40 AM {0}
I really liked meeting with Lisa, Nathan and Chad. I wish I could have hung out with Chad longer. Hanging with Chad. I'd like to go get coffee with him and talk about conceptual shit. I think we'd get along wonderfully.

Lisa is _awesome_. She's no bullshit. If I ever get SiTM off the ground she's getting a job offer.
